Character Name: Thara Celehar
Series: The Chronicles of Osreth
Age: 33
From When?: Just after losing his ability to speak to the dead, in Grief of Stones.
Warden Justification: He is very, very, very good at both LISTENING and pulling threads to untangle complicated, if metaphorical, 'knots'. His entire calling/job is to witness for the dead - meaning solve the puzzle of their death, but more often simply understanding them, their relationships and their assorted motivators... without making excuses or passing judgement. He, perhaps most importantly, has damn near endless amounts of patience. He's done quite a lot of teaching others, and taking charge of very messy situations and sorting them out thanks to being able to see the problems (and people) very clearly.
Item: The pilgrimage token from Hill of the Werewolves
Abilities/Powers: Absolutely none at the point of entering the game.
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies: There are a few fundamental things about Thara, who he is and his experiences that will inform his approach to being a warden.
The first and biggest is that he is, and for the majority of his life has been, a Witness for the Dead. Though part of that - a big part - for him has been the ability to speak directly to the dead (an ability he has recently lost to psychic damage) it is the least *important* part.
It is even less important when it comes to shaping how views and behaves as a Warden.
Witnessing for the dead involves a lot of (often overwhelming) paperwork and boredom (often assigned to small towns with little to do), and notifications of death, and dealing with the grieving as well. It also involves a lot of detective work - from figuring out the appropriate rites so that the unknown dead can be buried properly (to prevent them rising as ghouls and a matter of respect), to the much more rare (but intensive) identifying unidentified bodies and solving murder.
Relevantly, the position forbids him from lying (and he loathes it and will not) and means that he has been trained, from very young in how to listen.
All of this plays together into a 'service' based approach as a warden, and that he is very, very good at being very, very patient. His ability to read body language and behavior, notice details and pull on (or trace) loose threads of information from very little to go on, is impressive. He is likely to even view it, albeit metaphorically, as laying a ghoul to rest. He will definitely see it as an act of service, purpose and duty, which is likely to lead to a lot of devotion to his inmate, even if all his near endless, methodical, patience is needed.
Add in that previously when he lost his purpose and ability - as he has at the point he will arrive on bored- he heavily considered suicide, he can both relate to despair and super, extra, entirely isn't going to give up. He also won't make empty promises, OR fail to follow through on anything he says he will do. That (eventually) tends to be something that builds trust in others.
Not being willing (or to his mind able) to lie will also feature heavily. it is something that can at times make him seem harsh, or excessively blunt. In truth he is excessively blunt, as well as unwilling to lie, but those are only somewhat related issues and the sum result is at least that he is usually trustworthy.
The other primary event that shapes his approach to wardening - and is a reflection of who he is - is that his lover (Ervu) was married to a frankly terrible woman. Thara love the man completely and intensely, and when the wife turned up missing, Evru swore he knew nothing of it. It was a lie. The wife's body was found in a well and Thara was petitioned to Witness for her. He did and learned very quickly that Ervu had murdered her.
Thara provided sworn testimony against his own lover, knowing that it meant he would be - and was - executed. He cut (and kept) a lock of Ervu's hair just before he was beheaded. He then suffered such profound heartbreak he lost the ability to hear the dead for quite some time, contemplated suicide, and hacked his own hair off (it has since grown back).
What that says about how he will warden is one part his dedication to being truthful and what he sees as duty, and one part that he can love someone deeply but make no excuses for the wrongs they commit. This has (or rather will) have him being called harsh - fair, but harsh, in matter of fact - by others. He is not kinder to himself in that regard.
The result of ALL of that is that Thara is very likely to do best with an inmate motivated by desperation, passion, the belief - even if wrong - that they are doing something that must be done. He can be compassionate, love and personally forgiving and still clearly see the 'wrong', be patient, tug at threads and get somewhere.
What won't likely work is anyone who is cold, calculated, motivated by personal gain or greed. There, he is unlikely to be able to be particularly compassionate and the results lean more toward 'just judgemental and harsh'.
Of final note: The man (er elf) cannot fight. At all. He can just about manage to defend himself. Anyone who needs any level of physical... handling or restraint on a regular basis just simply will not work, because Thara can't do it, and doesn't want to do it, and that's not how his mind works at all. Stay alive himself to use other methods, sure, but he's not... physical that way.
Deal: His ability to hear the dead to return, though his motivation is mostly to be of use and to have purpose. Purpose is what keeps him alive.
